This year, Pythagoreion honours the historic Naval Battle of Mykale with a rich programme of religious, commemorative and cultural events – one of the most significant moments of the Samian Revolution of 1821.
Events begin at 08:00 with the Official Flag Raising at the port of Pythagoreion, in the presence of an Honour Guard and the Military Band of the 79th ADTE.
At 10:30, the official Te Deum will be held at the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, presided over by the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Samos and Icaria, His Eminence Evsevios. The commemorative address will be delivered by philologist Eleni Dima.
At 11:00, a memorial service and wreath-laying at the statue of Lycurgus Logothetis will take place in the presence of political, military and local authorities, concluding with a minute of silence and the national anthem.
At 11:30, the dance ensemble of the Cultural Association of Pythagoreion «Lycurgus» will perform Greek traditional dances at Eirini Square.
In the evening, the Flag Lowering Ceremony at the port of Pythagoreion takes place at 20:00, followed at 20:30 by the grand cultural event «Meeting in Pythagoreion», co-organised by the Holy Metropolis of Samos and Icaria and the Municipality of Eastern Samos, featuring cultural associations from across Samos in a colourful festival of traditional dances.
Representatives of the government, local authorities, Armed Forces, security services, Church, associations and the general public are all warmly invited to attend.
The Naval Battle of Mykale, fought on 6 August 1824, was decisive in repelling the Turkish invasion of Samos and remains a symbol of courage, unity and the struggle for freedom.
