The demanding world of traditional Japanese Kabuki theatre provides the setting for a sweeping story about art, friendship, tradition and ambition.
In 1964 Japan, Kikouo, a young man whose father belongs to a criminal organization (yakuza), enters the strict yet enchanting world of Kabuki and meets Shunsuke, the son of an important theatre family. A deep friendship develops between them, alongside intense rivalry as they both search for their place in the arts.
Based on the novel by Shuichi Yoshida, “Kokuho” is directed by Lee Sang-il and stars Ryo Yoshizawa, Ryusei Yokohama and Ken Watanabe. Japan, 2025. Running time: 175 minutes.
