History & today
The Philharmonic Society of Karlovasi “Kleanthes o Samios” was founded as Karlovasi grew into a civic and cultural centre of the eastern Aegean. Its founders were merchants, tanners and professionals; the first instruments and scores were bought through voluntary local support. Named in honour of Kleanthes of Samos, the ensemble quickly became part of town life — parades, feast days, school and community events.
In 2025 it marked 130 years of continuous activity and hosted the 1st Philharmonic Festival in Karlovasi, welcoming bands from Samos and Chios at the Porphyrias School and the harbour. Today it continues to train musicians, perform in open-air concerts, and stand as a landmark of culture in western Samos.
